Detroit Red Wings defenseman Seth Barton has left the organization and opted to sign in Malmö, Sweden, after playing the last two seasons in Finland's SM-Liiga with KooKoo Kouvola.
The Detroit Red Wings and defenseman Seth Barton have parted ways. Barton was originally selected 81st overall in the 3rd-round of the 2018 NHL Draft.
Barton would only play a total of three-seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL, his last season with the team was in 2022-2023.
He'd shuffle through the ECHL, in the Toledo Walleye and Cincinnati Cylones organizations, before heading to Finland to play for KooKoo Kouvola.
He'd play a total of two seasons with Kouvola, playing 74 games and scoring a total of 30 points (9 goals, 21 assists).
His previous contract, signed with the Detroit Red Wings organization, paid him a total of $832K as a prospect with the Grand Rapids Griffins. He was set to become a UFA during the 2026-2027 season per PuckPedia.
However, since the Red Wings have opted not to re-sign him, he'll have to stick it out in Sweden, and prove to other GMs in the NHL that he's worth the investment that Detroit didn't see.
During his AHL career with the Grand Rapids Griffins, he played a total of 40 games, and scored 12 points (3 goals, 9 assists), and was unable to crack a full-time lineup in both the NHL and AHL levels of play.
Is this another Ken Holland bust that GM Steve Yzerman is wiping the slate clean of? It seems that way.
