Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson, coming off his 1st full year in the NHL, has decided he'll be representing Sweden in the 2025 IIHF World Championships.
Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson is coming off his 1st full year in the National Hockey League, but his year isn't quite finished yet.
He's announced that he'll be representing his native Sweden in the upcoming 2025 IIHF World Championships.
Team Sweden's official social media account welcomed Edvinsson (along with Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Arvid Soderblom, the brother of Detroit forward Elmer Soderblom) to the team:
We are pleased to present two Tre Kronor debutants! Defender Simon Edvinsson and goalkeeper Arvid Söderblom are joining Tre Kronor.
His +12 rating was the best on Detroit's roster; he also averaged 21:07 of ice time per outing. His overall performance was impressive, per Red Wings coach Todd McLellan.
He's a harder player now. He's more aggressive now. He is more responsible for the good and the bad things that happen during a game. Like he has really grown up and maybe gone from a boy to a man.
I don't know if that's fair to say. But you know, there's still more runway there for him to keep going. So you see all the hockey stuff, we see all the other evolution, the commitment to strength and both mentally and physically exist with him. So that's been impressive.
This won't be his 1st foray into international play; he previously helped Sweden to a bronze medal as part of the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship.
