GM Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings will officially say bye to Marco Kasper, who is headed for the international stage and IIHF competition, health insurance pending.
Marco Kasper is making quick work of season's end to enlist himself in helping out his country in the next IIHF tournament.
Depending on how quickly Kasper can pass a medical check, the forward will be joining Austria to play in the IIHF World Championships.
Kasper himself hasn't played in international competition since at least 2021. According to HockeyDB, he played in the U20 World Junior Championships, skating in 4 games, and scoring only 1 point (1 assist).
Now, he'll have a chance medical pending to prove to his country that he's a top-six forward in the NHL, and in the IIHF this summer.
This season he's played 77 games for the Red Wings and scored a total of 37 points (19 goals, 18 assists) in his rookie year. In the AHL he was just as productive scoring a total of 2 points (1 goal, 1 assist) in 2 games.
In 2020, we can recall thanks to TSN a memory of where Kasper's biggest worry, other than the IIHF WJC, was homework.
Team Austria will be thrilled to be able to roster Kasper this year, as his production in international competition hasn't been elite, but is respectable.
Kasper's international scoresheet: 35 games played and scored 15 points (6 goals, 9 assists) with Austria per
Elite Prospects.
The Innsbruck, Austrian-born forward was selected 8th overall in the 1st-round of the 2022 NHL Draft. He finished the season centering elite wingers
Alex DeBrincat and
Patrick Kane on the Red Wings' 2nd line.
Will he improve upon his 37-point performance in 2024-2025?
