Instead of signing his ELC, Michigan State goalie Trey Augustine has decided to return to the NCAA instead of the Grand Rapids Griffins, and leave Steve Yzerman to his devices for better or worse.
The Detroit Red Wings fans thought they would be getting great news when they heard Michigan State goalie
Trey Augustine's season ended.
We thought we'd hear news of him signing his entry-level contract and beginning his professional career with the Red Wings organization.
But instead, at the age of 20, he turned down his ELC and opted to return to
Michigan State and get more experience playing collegiate hockey.
While the fact that he didn't sign in Detroit is disappointing, there was a good reason he didn't sign.
It was all his decision. He felt it was best for his game that he'd return to the NCAA and play another year with the Spartans.
The Big Ten Goalie of the Year and Sullivan Award Finalist finished the season with a 19-7-4 record, 2.08 GAA, and a .924 save percentage.
The twenty-year-old also has back-to-back gold medal wins with Team USA under Head Coach David Carle.
How much more development can he get in the Big Ten and MSU? It's difficult to tell, but maybe he wants to wait it out another year and see if the Red Wings improve.
This season was a bust for the team; however, with players like Axel Sandin-Pellikka trickling in, Augustine could be another future building block in the puzzle that is the Red Wings.
