The Red Wings' year is officially over, and they've announced a roster move involving Austin Watson after their 4-3 OT loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Detroit Red Wings are set to break for the summer following last night's disappointing 4-3 OT loss to the divisional foe Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena.
It was a bitter
end to the year for the Red Wings, who led the game 3-1 before the Maple Leafs rattled off 3 unanswered goals, including the tying goal from low-scoring defenseman
Chris Tanev with literally less than 5 seconds left in regulation.
Following the game, they announced a roster move in which they moved Austin Watson back to the American Hockey League.
Watson was one of 3 Detroit goal scorers as part of the loss; his backhand shot past goaltender
Joseph Woll tied the game late in the 1st period:
Watson played sparingly for the Red Wings in his occasional time up with the club since being re-called from the Grand Rapids Griffins; it was his 2nd year with the Detroit organization.
During his NHL career, Watson has also played for the Nashville Predators along with a pair of Detroit divisional foes in the Ottawa Senators and Tampa Bay Lightning.
He played in 13 total games with the Red Wings this year, scoring 3 goals; he has 42 points in 58 games with Grand Rapids (19G, 23A) as well as 96 total penalty minutes.
Watson also scored one of the more unique goals in the NHL this year, as his wild deflection against the Utah Hockey Club made highlight reels everywhere:
