In Game 1 of the ECHL Western Conference Finals, Jan Bednar, a 2020 Detroit Red Wings draft pick, made 25 saves to help the Toledo Walleye beat the Kansas City Mavericks 2-0.
Bednar at age 22, is signed to the Red Wings through a contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
This was Toledo's first playoff shutout since 2022, and Bednar was named the game's most valuable player.
Bednar has been sharing goaltending duties with
Carter Gylander, a 23-year-old Red Wings prospect drafted in 2019. If the Walleye stick with this rotation, Gylander will likely play in Game 2 on Saturday in Kansas City.
Toledo's Game 3 slated for Tuesday
The series moves to Toledo for Game 3 on Tuesday.
In the playoffs, Gylander has a 4-1 record, a 2.81 goals-against average, and an .898 save percentage.
Bednar's stats are 5-1, a 2.18 goals-against average, and a .922 save percentage, which ultimately makes a case for him to steal a roster spot in Grand Rapids come next season, and puts Jack Campbell on the hot seat.
For Campbell himself, who has bounced around throughout his NHL career and now finds himself in a backup position in the AHL, he may suggest a change of scenery as well in hopes to spark his game.
