Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman spoke matter-of-factly about prospect goaltender Sebastian Cossa and what he must do to progress in his career.

A question that many a Red Wings fan has on their minds lately is when prospect goaltender Sebastian Cossa, widely seen as the long-term solution in Detroit's crease, will finally start seeing regular NHL action.
Cossa had a decent showing for the AHL's Grand Rapids in 2024-25, going 21-15-5 with a 2.45 GAA and .911 SV% and a single shutout.
But GM Steve Yzerman said flatly that he's not ready for the NHL and that he needs to progress more in the AHL before that conversation can happen.
We're looking for him to take another step. I'm not prepared today to put him in the NHL. He had a very good first two-thirds of the season, his play dipped a little bit after the American League All-Star break, and this is a big playoffs for him. So, I'm not ruling anything out, but he's going to have to take another step here if we want to count on him to be here in Detroit next year.

Right now, Yzerman seems content to go into next season with the tandem of Cam Talbot and Petr Mrazek; Mrazek is now in his 2nd tenure with the Red Wings after being re-acquired at the Trade Deadline last month.
In the meantime, Yzerman also said that the Red Wings don't have a "real horse" they can depend on.
You look at the best teams in the league, generally they have a real horse that they can ride in net on a regular basis. We're not in that position yet. We're hopeful to be there one day, whether that's with our draft picks or (if we have) to go look elsewhere for that guy, we will.

Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon, who completed a 2-year deal, isn't likely to be back.
