Detroit Red Wings in "Serious" trade talks to acquire defenseman Erik Karlsson from the Pittsburgh Penguins

The Detroit Red Wings intend to go all in this offseason, as the organization continues their pursuit of re-tooling for the 2025/26 NHL season.

The 2025/26 NHL season will mark a decade of postseason absence if this Original Six franchise doesn't undergo major moves this summer, and new insight has unveiled that general manager, Steve Yzerman, will do everything in his power to ensure that does not happen.

As a recent report has revealed that the Pittsburgh Penguins' defenseman, Erik Karlsson's name is once again looming the rumor mill, but this time, the Detroit Red Wings have been linked to a move for the veteran blue-liner.

The Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman, Erik Karlsson, has been the center of trade discussions recently, yet this time, these talks are circulating the Red Wings.

And the organization is seemingly closing in on a deal.

According to NHL reporter, Roger Hicks, the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins have been in talks regarding a trade involving Karlsson, and it seems as though these talks have advanced.

The 35-year old defensemen currently has two years left on his eight-year, $92M deal with the Penguins, and carries an $11.5M annual cap hit.

However, the San Jose Sharks are already retaining a portion of that deal due to the 2023 trade, leaving Pittsburgh to only move part of that.

Which, even then, the Penguins would most likely need to absorb more to complete a deal, and convince an organization to take on Karlsson.

That being said, if an agreement is reached with the Red Wings, Karlsson would bring an immense amount of experience to Detroit's blue line, and could slot into the second pairing perfectly.
