Detroit Red Wings legend's son Jake Chelios announces major career decision
Jake Chelios, the son of longtime Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios, has announced his retirement from pro hockey.
Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios played in the NHL until he was nearly 50 years old, but that won't be the case with his son Jake Chelios, who has announced his retirement from professional hockey.
The younger Chelios, who is 34, has played the last few years overseas in the Kontinental Hockey League with Kunlun Red Star; they are now officially known as the Shanghai Dragons.
He released a special farewell message thanking those who made his career possible and the lifelong friends that he made along the way.
As my career comes to an end, I want to thank everyone I've had the privilege of working with over the last six years. Fans, thank you for your support. No matter where our 'home' has been. Boss, thank you. Management and staff, thank you for your support. You work your ass off every day to keep the team going and growing. To my teammates and their families, thank you. My wife and I have had the rare opportunity to play and travel the world with these amazing people and have made friends for life.
Chelios played in 5 NHL games with the Red Wings, who signed him to a contract in 2018; he also played multiple games in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Chris Chelios had his number retired by the Blackhawks before they played the Red Wings
Chelios, who was captain of the Blackhawks before he was traded in shocking fashion to the Red Wings in 1999 at the Trade Deadline, would play another
10 years in the NHL with Detroit.
He won 2 Stanley Cups with Detroit in 2002 and 2008 and later briefly played for the Atlanta Thrashers before retiring.
Before a game against the Red Wings in February of 2024, the Blackhawks retired Chelios' No. 7 sweater number, which was also worn by Brent Seabrook for multiple years.
