Detroit Red Wings trade for a top 4 defenseman: NHL insider just confirmed it

After signing a few players in free agency and completing a few trades since the draft, including acquiring top goalie John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks, it seems the Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman isn't done making moves.

Indeed, in a press conference held earlier today, Yzerman opened up on many interesting topics, including what he plans to do next.

He went straight to the point when he revealed that he was interested in acquiring a top-four defenseman before next season.

He even added that he'd prefer adding a right-handed defenseman, but he wouldn't mind a lefty:

As of now, the market is completely dried up of right-handed defensemen. If he wants to add a player at that position, Yzerman is likely going to use the trade market.

One of the most interesting candidates reportedly available is the Buffalo Sabres' Bowen Byram.

A victim of the high demand for his position in the NHL, Byram has already been traded once. But with all that is going on in Buffalo, he could end up changing teams once again, with reports confirming the Sabres could trade him.

But this is where it gets interesting: Byram is a restricted free agent, and the Wings could consider sending an offer sheet his way.

It would cost several draft picks to accomplish, but it would be surprising to see Byram refuse to sign the offer if he had an opporunity to get out of Buffalo.

Last season, in 82 games with the Sabres, the 24-year-old defenseman scored 38 points, including seven goals.

The 2022 Stanley Cup Champion with the Colorado Avalanche could bring a lot of depth to the Wings' blue line, with a complementary style to Moritz Seider or Simon Edvinsson.
