A former Detroit Red Wings defenseman issued an unexpected statement after leaving the team in free agency.

A lot of people were surprised to learn that the former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry signed a one-year deal at the league's minimum wage with the Florida Panthers in free agency.
After tough injuries, at 37 years old, and with a young family, Petry still wanted to compete, and in a recent interview, revealed that it was a "no-brainer" to join the Panthers:
"It's an exciting place to play, and you see, obviously, what they've accomplished over the last few years. And for me, when I got the call that there was an interest in me coming there, I saw (Sam) Bennett and (Aaron) Ekblad and (Brad) Marchand re-signing. So when they called, it was a no-brainer. You hear about the group. You know what they do together on the ice, off the ice. You hear so many good things about it. And like I said, when they had interest, it was a no-brainer for me."

Petry was limited to 44 games this season due to an injury but is expected to be ready for the start of training camp:
"Everything's feeling good. (It was) something that I tried to push through. You never want to miss time with an injury, and I wanted to push through it and ended up just taking the time off, getting it feeling better. Came back at the end of the year. And then now, having the last couple months to fully recover, fully go through the rehab process, get everything feeling good to make sure I'm ready for the start of September."

After scoring 32 points over the past two seasons, Panthers fans are eager to see if he'll be able to get back to his former production level, when he could average 40 points per season.
