Done in Detroit: Insider confirms a goaltending change is underway for the Red Wings
Per a new report from NHL analyst Andy Strickland, the Detroit Red Wings are looking to make an upgrade to their goaltending, meaning Petr Mrazek could soon depart.
The Detroit Red Wings pulled an interesting trade at the Trade Deadline in March, bringing back goaltender Petr Mrazek from the Chicago Blackhawks for underachieving forward and former 1st round pick Joe Veleno.
Mrazek joined a crowded Red Wings crease that already included Cam Talbot and
Alex Lyon, along with prospects
Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine.
The move was a bit puzzling, as Mrazek is under contract for another year along with Talbot, while it's more likely that Lyon departs the team in free agency this summer.
But per a new report from NHL analyst Andy Strickland, the Red Wings are looking to make an upgrade to their goaltending in the next few months.
Detroit, Philadelphia, Edmonton among teams actively looking to significantly upgrade their goaltending.
The question that immediately comes to mind would be why the Red Wings acquired Mrazek, who has another year left on his contract, if they were planning on moving on from him during the summer for a more reliable goaltender.
Like Mrazek, Talbot also has another year left on his contract.
Meanwhile, Cossa doesn't appear any closer to making the jump to the NHL, while Augustine recently announced that he would be returning to play his senior year for the Michigan State Spartans of the NCAA.
Among the more standout names that have appeared in recent rumors are
Jeremy Swayman and
Thatcher Demko. Could Yzerman be thinking about taking a major swing for either one of them?
