Former NHL goaltender Cory Schneider Calls Out Red Wings' Steve Yzerman
Former NHL goaltender and current analyst Cory Schneider called out what he thinks is a lack of speed on the Red Wings' rebuilding process under GM Steve Yzerman.
The Detroit Red Wings have now missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for 9 straight years, marking the longest drought in franchise history.
Considering the Red Wings are on the verge of entering their centennial year (founded in 1926), that's an eye-opening stat.
Red Wings legendary captain and franchise icon
Steve Yzerman has been at the helm as general manager since April 2019 when he succeeded Ken Holland, who truly left him one of the most difficult situations that a general manager in professional sports has ever left for his replacement.
And while Yzerman has built up Detroit's prospect pool, which was barren in 2019, into one of the most highly-rated in the NHL in the 6 full years he's been on the job, his trades and free agents signings have drawn considerable scrutiny.
Combined with the fact that Detroit has missed the playoffs
all 6 years that Yzerman has been GM, a good percentage of Red Wings fans have begun to grow restless.
Former NHL goaltender Cory Schneider, who is now an analyst, had some interesting words for the state of the Red Wings under Yzerman.
There were plenty of responses on X; some of whom agreed with what Schneider said, while some other Detroit fans took umbrage with the former goaltender's comments and defended Yzerman's work as GM.
One thing is for certain - the scrutiny on Yzerman and restlessness from fans will only increase if the Red Wings fail to make the playoffs next year.
