The Red Wings traded underachieving former 1st round draft pick Joe Veleno to the Chicago Blackhawks, where he continues to struggle and has made no impact.
When the Detroit Red Wings traded
Tomas Tatar to the Vegas Golden Knights in 2018, they received a 1st round draft pick in return and later used it to pick Joe Veleno in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.
His time with the Red Wings ended earlier this month, as he was sent to the Chicago Blackhawks in a trade that brought
Petr Mrazek back to Detroit along with 4th line forward
Craig Smith.
So far this year, Veleno has a total of 10 points (5G, 5A) and has failed to record a point with Chicago since the trade.
He's also routinely gone several weeks at a time without a single point. During the entire month of January (13 games), he scored a single goal.
His NHL career looks to be over as he may be heading to the AHL shortly.
From October through the end of November, he scored a single goal with an assist. And soon after being acquired by the Blackhawks,
Veleno expressed a desire to show that he is capable of more.
The beginning of the season didn't go as well as I would've liked in terms of production, ice time and the way that I wanted to play. I thought I would have a good opportunity there, but things weren't working out. I couldn't really tell you why, but everything [was] a little bit involved, with the coaching change and all that stuff.'
Veleno has skated in 292 career NHL games, scoring 74 points (35G, 39A). He's under contract for another year with an AAV (average annual value) of $2,275,000.
