Free agent forward narrows search down to two teams, including the Detroit Red Wings
Former Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Pacioretty is still on the hunt for a contract, and GM Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings could oblige him and give him a reason to return home for good.
Max Pacioretty spends his offseason in Michigan.
What better selling point for the Red Wings when it comes to acquiring the former Maple Leafs forward who remains an unsigned UFA this late in the postseason?
Pacioretty played 37 games during the regular season with the Maple Leafs as a depth forward who can play on special teams. As he grows older, he's had to evolve his game into a more punishing and physical style.
Of course, he can still score, but like Hobey Baker Award winner Jimmy Vesey, he's had to adapt to the role given to him.
For the Red Wings, this could be a net positive, as he can play on the power play and play a mean game in front of the net.
For the Red Wings, Yzerman shouldn't have to dig deep in order to sell the team to him. It allows him to not only spend his offseason in Detroit, but he's a stone's throw from his family.
A Connecticut-born forward who played in Michigan during his collegiate career, he's found himself as a journeyman in the NHL after his exit from the Vegas Golden Knights.
Last season, he'd be a key player during the Toronto Maple Leafs' last playoff run, scoring 8 points (3-5) in 11 games.
He's earned a new contract, but no NHL teams seem ready to take the risk of signing him.
Last season, he earned $873K AAV with a bonus-laden contract, a similar deal he could use to lure the forward back to Michigan.
The forward has other suitors at the moment, namely the Edmonton Oilers.
