Hockey world mourns the loss of several following tragedy at Lapu Lapu festival
The hockey community is grieving following a devastating incident at Vancouver's Lapu Lapu Day Festival, a celebration of Filipino culture that turned tragic.
An unidentified man drove his vehicle into the crowded festival, resulting in the deaths of 11 people, as confirmed by the Vancouver Police in a statement.
The Vancouver Canucks shared their condolences on social media at 1:51 AM, posting:
«We are heartbroken by the tragic events that occurred tonight at the Lapu Lapu Day celebration. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted, including Vancouver's Filipino community. We extend our deepest condolences and support during this unimaginably difficult time.»
The statement was posted with an image with the same message by the Canucks Sports & Entertainment.
Rai says a number of victims "have not yet been identified."
He said "dozens" of people have been injured, "some critically."
Those looking for loved ones who were at the festival can either go in person to the 24-hour assistance centre at the Douglas Park community centre or speak with a victim liaison officer at 1-604-717-3321.
We offer our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to all those affected by this tragedy.
