An insider revealed what it would take for the Detroit Red Wings to acquire the Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson on the trade market.
The NHL Draft and the opening of the free agent market are in less than two weeks, marking the busiest time in the offseason.
Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman has made it clear he's not looking to sacrifice the future for short-term gain. Still, he remains open to using picks and prospects to bring in players who can help long-term, and few players fit that mold better than the Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson.
With his contract expiring after the next season, Robertson could change teams this offseason after reports confirmed the Stars likely won't be able to sign him to an extension.
Dallas needs cap space, with just under $5 million available and several key forwards unsigned, including Matt Duchene and captain Jamie Benn. The Red Wings, on the other hand, desperately need a top-line left wing.
A recent trade proposal sent to insiders imagined Detroit landing both Robertson and defenseman Matt Dumba in exchange for the 2025 13th overall pick, a 2026 second-rounder, and young forward Elmer Söderblom.
The deal would clear $11.5 million in cap for the Stars while giving them future assets and a young forward on an entry-level deal.
But according to The Athletic's Mark Lazerus, it wouldn't be enough. He suggests Dallas, firmly in win-now mode after three straight Western Conference Finals appearances, would demand a more impactful return, possibly someone like Nate Danielson, one of the best prospects in Detroit.
That would be a tough pill for Yzerman to swallow. Danielson represents a critical part of Detroit's long-term plan, and while the Red Wings are feeling pressure to take a step forward, sacrificing elite young talent may be a step too far.
