On a Saturday afternoon, a major announcement was made by NHL Insider Darren Dreger regarding the Detroit Red Wings' pursuit of Rasmus Andersson, as it appears they're out.

The Detroit Red Wings legitimately need help on the blue line. There's a mandate to keep the team in the running for a playoff push after last year's conflict between Dylan Larkin and Steve Yzerman.
One candidate to upgrade the defense was Rasmus Andersson, whose name has been around the trade rumor mill daily with no resolution.
There was a desire for him to be traded before February and the start of the 2026 Olympics in Milano-Cortina. Things have changed for the "Yzerplan":

The Detroit Red Wings miss out on a top-tier blueliner, Rasmus Andersson, but at what cost?

It would've made too much sense for it to happen, I guess. With the Red Wings out of the deal, who is left to pursue on the right side?
The left side of the blue line needs some attention, in addition to another top-six winger being a target to upgrade scoring depth. This season is too important not to make a move, whether by trade or waiver claims, in order to stock up for a deep run.
It could come down to another case of a player not agreeing to an extension, which caused the Quinn Hughes trade to fail, or simply Craig Conroy's asking price being too high for him.
Parting ways with high-end assets for a rental is a bad price to pay, especially if there's no Stanley Cup afterward.
Here's an idea of what the Red Wings would have traded to the Flames if a deal came to fruition.

-1st round draft pick
Perhaps we won't miss this too much; a 1st-round pick is a high price.
The Boston Bruins and Vegas Golden Knights are two teams that could still be in the running.
