The NHL has swiftly took back their past announcement regarding the 2026 All-Star game which was set to take place at UBS Arena in Long Island, New York.
Commissioner Gary Bettman has announced that the New York Islanders will not be hosting the 2026 All-Star Game, but a different 'undetermined' event.
With the World's also taking place in 2026, Bettman revealed that the event replacing the All-Star game will be a 'kickoff' to the Olympics, he said in a statement to the media on Tuesday.
It is not clear as to what event is taking place, however it's all but confirmed that we will no longer be having All-Star Games taking place moving forward.
«We'll have an event at UBS before we go to the Olympics, but then we'll do something that's more focused on a major hockey event for the following year,» Bettman said. «We have a little bit of time to finalize what we're doing.»
Since UBS Arena opened in 2021 the New York Islanders plead their case to be hosts of an All-Star Event, which they were granted in 2024.
"We look forward to working with the league on any event that will showcase our world class facility, UBS Arena," the Islanders said in a statement.
Due to the success of the recent 4 Nations Face-Off introduced this year which brought the NHL a whopping 16 million viewers for the final game between USA and Canada, the All-Star game is now axed as it's no longer a leading money maker.
It's unfortunate that the All-Star game won't be taking place as Red Wings stars such as Dylan Larkin, Patrick Kane, Alex DeBrincat or Lucas Raymond won't be able to showcase their skills, but the recent takeover of the 4 Nations Face-off tournament is certainly a treat for fans.
