While Mitch Marner may be the biggest fish available on the open free agent market this summer, one top NHL analyst doesn't believe Detroit is a realistic destination for him.

It's now 9 straight years without an appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the Detroit Red Wings, the longest drought in team history.
Considering that the Red Wings are on the verge of celebrating their centennial season from their founding in 1926, that's a startling and eyebrow-raising statistic.
The general consensus is that Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman is is beginning to feel pressure to start delivering on the famed "Yzerplan" that began in April 2019, albeit in a rough situation that he inherited from former GM Ken Holland.
Detroit could have the chance to sign one of the highest-profile free-agent forwards to hit the open market in recent memory, as all indications point toward Mitch Marner leaving the divisional foe Toronto Maple Leafs.
NHL analyst Darren Dreger, who is highly respected and connected in hockey circles, doesn't seem to think that Detroit is a realistic destination for Marner to land.
Joining TSN's Overdrive segment, Dreger said that he doesn't believe Marner would want to make the short leap from Toronto to Detroit in free agency.
If you're Marner, I would think that list is probably short. Every player, UFA, wants to go to a low tax state...there are a number of teams. That's best-case scenario. As much as it is about the money, it can't all be about the money. Otherwise, you're looking at a much larger list of teams.

The Detroit Red Wings would love to add a piece like Mitch Marner. Does Marner just want to go down the highway to Detroit? Probably not.

Marner's contract, which carried an AAV (average annual value) of just under $11 million, ends on July 1, and the Red Wings (as well as competing clubs) would have to pony up a hefty number to entice him.
What are the chances that the Red Wings are one of those teams?
