A recent report by Cole Shelton states that the Detroit Red Wings might sign star forward Mitch Marner, who will be a free agent on July 1st.

Many teams will want Marner if he does test the open market, though.
The report predicts Marner could get a seven-year contract worth $13.25 million per year, and the Red Wings should have enough money to pay him, many teams are cap strapped and can't offer a deal like that.

Insider Thinks Marner Might Leave Toronto

All season long, Marner has said he's only thinking about playing hockey and not about his next contract.
In an interview with The Athletic's Jonas Siegel, the reporter got the feeling that Marner might leave the Maple Leafs when he becomes a free agent. Siegel said:
«I wasn't sure if he wants to stay in Toronto after talking to him. Only he knows what he's thinking, but the playoffs will matter a lot. I thought there was a 50-50 chance he'd stay or leave. Now, I think he might leave. He kept saying he's just here to play hockey.»

The Red Wings missed the playoffs and GM Steve Yzerman is surely feeling the pressure to make the team better for the 2025-26 season by signing big players like Marner.
Yzerman said after the trade deadline:
«I'll keep doing what I think is best for the team, at the deadline, over the summer, and at the draft. I want to make the playoffs and win a Stanley Cup as much as anyone in this city. I'm responsible for where we are now, and I'll make the best choices for the team, both for now and the future.»

The Red Wings haven't been to the playoffs since 2015.
