The hockey world, including the NHL, is mourning the passing of longtime Detroit Red Wings forward Mark Kirton at the age of 67.

Mark sadly passed away on Sunday after a battle with ALS.
"Today, the hockey world lost not only a talented player but a remarkable human being. Mark Kirton, former NHL player and tireless advocate for ALS awareness, has passed away.

Mark's career in the NHL was defined by determination, teamwork, and heart. Off the ice, he brought those same qualities into his fight against ALS. Faced with one of life's toughest challenges, he chose to become a voice and champion for others, raising awareness and inspiring hope.

His courage was unshakable, his advocacy was selfless, and his spirit touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Mark was not only a teammate but also a friend, mentor, and role model.

We will remember Mark for his strength, compassion, and the legacy he leaves behind both in hockey and in the ALS community. His life was a reminder that true heroes are not only defined by their achievements, but by the battles they fight with dignity and grace.

Our deepest condolences to his wife Lisa and children Adam, Sarah and Taylor, friends, teammates, and all those whose lives he impacted. Mark will be dearly missed, but never forgotten.

Rest in peace, Mark."

Mark Kirton was supported by Calgary Flames, Mikael Backlund in ALS work

Kirton was supported by longtime Calgary Flames captain Mikael Backlund during his ALS work, and recently sent them a thank you message across social media.
"Thank you NHL Flames and in particular Mikael Backlund for all your ALS work. Believe me when I say the ALS community is thrilled to have you on our side. Once again, together is the only way to find a cure for this dreadful disease."
Rest in Peace, Mark.
