Original Six Rivals combine for a large announcement involving the 2025-26 NHL season
The
Detroit Red Wings will face off against their Original Six and Atlantic Division foes Montreal Canadiens, on home ice on October 9th, 2025.
The puck will drop on Little Caesar's Arena as Lucas Raymond and the Detroit Red Wings seek to put a stop to the Montreal Canadiens in their tracks in their first game of the season.
With new Head Coach Todd McLellan, it's not difficult to imagine the
Red Wings will come into 2025-26 with a different attitude after being pushed out of a wildcard spot in the playoffs.
The Red Wings finished 6th in the Atlantic Division and 10th in the Eastern Conference, with a record of 39-35-8 in 82 games, with 86 points.
GM Steve Yzerman hasn't made many bold moves this postseason, other than acquiring
John Gibson for
Petr Mrazek and a draft pick.
While he traded away
Vladimir Tarasenko for futures to the Minnesota Wild, giving him a fresh start on the John Hynes-led team.
The Red Wings have $12 million in cap space at the moment and haven't been able to sign a top-six winger to plug that hole in the lineup.
Could the Red Wings paste together a scrappy lineup that pushes their way into the playoffs before October?
It'll be interesting to see the new look Detroit Red Wings take on the Montreal Canadiens, who recently added Joe Veleno to the team with a $900K cap hit.
Veleno was a former 1st-round pick by the Red Wings and will return to the Little Caesar's Arena at the beginning of the season.
