It represents their longest winning streak since January of 2012, and is a stark contrast to where they were in the standings at the NHL's Christmas break.
Rookie forward Marco Kasper, who was promoted to Detroit's first line alongside Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond, was credited with the 1st goal of the game:
Larkin described Kasper's play as "tenacious", representing the new mentality the team has under coach Todd McLellan since the change was made on December 26.
And he's tenacious on the puck, so it's been good. And our whole team, everyone was skating with the puck and making plays and hanging onto it down low. So it's good to see Marco contribute and a lot of guys tonight contribute on the score sheet.
It was Kasper's 2nd goal in as many games; he scored an empty-net goal on Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks in Detroit's 5-3 win.
Not long ago, Larkin broke a 15-game scoreless streak with an empty-net goal, and he's since scored several more times since then. Could Kasper's empty net against Chicago have the same effect? McLellan thinks so.
You look at (Dylan Larkin), he got the empty net goal (against Pittsburgh) and felt good about it and took off.
