Finnie, wearing a Hockey Fights Cancer jersey, would discuss the struggles of being a family working through the disease together.
The Red Wings forward wouldn't be here without her support, and now he's working to keep the fight going for his mom.
His mother, Shannon, shared an emotional message on the work he's put into making it to the NHL, one of pride.
«So proud of him,» Shannon said. «He's put in a lot of hard work, and it hasn't always been the easiest path. He grew late, so for us, it's just He's really focused and dedicated. Yeah, we're very proud.»

The former 7th-round pick, selected 201st overall, has chosen not to take anything for granted after witnessing his mom's struggles.
A pledge that has gotten him to the heights of the greatest hockey league in the world.
Finnie originally wasn't a shoe-in to make it into the NHL, as the former 84-point (37-47) point forward who played for the Kamloops Blazers found himself impressing Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan and earning a spot on the lineup out of training camp.
Now a part of the "Kid-line" in Detroit, Finnie has been making a great impact and has contributed to the Red Wings' first-place ranking in the NHL's Atlantic Division.
His play has been a revelation, and he has won the heart of TNT Analyst Paul Bissonnette.
