A new report suggested that the Detroit Red Wings are keeping a defenseman within the organization only due to the lowball offers they have received so far.

In the past months, there have been many trade rumors surrounding the Detroit Red Wings organization.
The team has had a great start to the season, but adding a top-six forward and a top-four defenseman would be a great move for the team.
Steve Yzerman has many assets available, but one of them could be a bit more complicated to move than initially believed.

Red Wings Could Keep Trade Asset Due To Low Offers

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported a few days ago that Erik Gustafsson, who's currently in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins, is being shopped by Yzerman, like a few other players such as Jonatan Berggren or Michael Rasmussen:
"Detroit has Erik Gustafsson in the AHL, and some forwards who might need a change of scenery because their runway is shortening in Motown."

However, a new report from Detroit Hockey Now suggested that teams haven't made interesting offers to acquire Gustafsson, which could force Yzerman to keep the veteran defenseman:
"We are hearing that teams don't want to give up anything except a lower-round draft pick to get Gustafsson. If that is true, the Red Wings could decide to keep him in Grand Rapids to see what happens."

Keeping him unless a better offer comes would make sense for Detroit. If injuries occur, Yzerman will be more than happy to be able to count on Gustafsson as a call-up option.
Gustafsson, 33, is in the final season of his two-year, $2M AAV contract and will also be an interesting option for playoff contenders looking to add defensive depth ahead of the playoffs.
At this point, I believe the defenseman is much more likely to end up traded at the deadline, after the Olympics.
