The Detroit Red Wings have one top prospect who will be competing in the Channel One Cup, which is a four-team international tournament.
This is only a year after his 54-point season with his former team, the HC Vityaz, where he'd score 54 points (15-39) in 65 games in the KHL.
Now he's poised for bigger and better things, as he has been selected to the preliminary roster for the Channel One Cup.
"The Channel One Cup is an annual ice hockey event held in Russia under the auspices of Channel One. It is an open tournament typically composed of various national teams."
Dmitry Buchelnikov's Future in the KHL
This will be Buchelnikov's third full year in the KHL, this time playing with CSKA Moscow, a team affiliated with former Red Wings forward Sergei Fedorov.
Now, he's on the cusp of something bigger with his latest nomination to Team Russa for the Channel One Cup.
This is setting the stage for a potential jump to North America in the future, as the former 2nd-round pick
could turn pro with the Red Wings next season.
In the meantime, he remains in regular contact with the organization through their Russian scout, Nikolai Vakurov.
"We spoke probably two months ago,» Buchelnikov said via Sport24. «We talked about the season, what I will do in the summer. We always communicate with Nikolai Vakurov, their Russian scout, and are in touch. And not only about hockey, about life."
Can Buchelnikov be another diamond in the rough for Steve Yzerman, whose later-round picks seem to be hits lately with center
Emmitt Finnie?
