A new report addressed the ongoing trade speculation surrounding a Detroit Red Wings goaltender and explained why it wouldn't make sense.
Patience is already starting to wear thin among some fans concerning Steve Yzerman's biggest acquisition of the 2025 offseason: the veteran goalie John Gibson.
However, it would be surprising to see him leave the Wings on the trade market.
John Gibson Trade Rumor Barely Makes Sense
It's true to say that Gibson's performances haven't met expectations so far this season, with only four wins in 12 games, a 3.46 GAA and a .870 SV%.
But some goalies need more time than others to adapt to their new teams, and trading him away with only a quarter of the season done appears premature.
Also, with his current performances, it would be surprising to see teams make interesting offers to Yzerman if he were to put him on the trade block.
Finally, the state of the goalie unit across all organizational levels makes a Gibson trade scenario much less likely to be plausible.
Cam Talbot is 38, much older than Gibson, and will enter free agency after the current season.
Trey Augustine and Sebastian Cossa appear to be the Wings' ideal long-term tandem, and Gibson could be a great player to keep around until Augustine reaches the NHL.
His $6,400,000 AAV deal will expire at the end of the 2026-27 season. If a trade involving him were to happen before then, it would be much more likely to go down toward next season's deadline.
