Steve Yzerman's job in Detroit potentially saved by one specific group of players
The Detroit Red Wings have yet again hit their annual-late season slump, fuelling fans to believe it may be best for general manager, Steve Yzerman, to be on his way out of Detroit, however, following a recent incident, the GM may have just saved his spot within the organization.
Detroit has faced a turbulent March
The team was believed to be in postseason contention just last month, and have quickly made their chances of attending this year's NHL 2025 playoffs very slim.
Fans, desperate for postseason hockey, called for Steve Yzerman's job if Detroit misses the playoffs this year. Yet, despite the team's struggle, the Red Wings are exactly where Yzerman expected them to be, reaching for the second wild card spot after a shaky start.
Any Red Wings fans are aware of Yzerman's dedication towards longevity of key-players, rather than flashy moves, and behind closed doors, that is exactly what he has been working towards.
Since the GM took over in 2019,
Yzerplan has prioritized rebuilding through the draft, and although it's been a process, he wasn't given the best hand when he enrolled into the organization.
He inherited a mess with Ken Holland, including lingering bad contracts, but the GM's draft record stood out.
His first pick,
Moritz Seider, is now a key-defenseman in the team's roster. Prospects like
Antti Tuomisto and Cater Gylander develop in the minors, and even late-round pick, Kirill Tyutyayev has portrayed pro action, emphasizing on Yzerman's abilities and success within scouting.
Steve Yzerman's newly acquired head coach, Todd McLellan, aligns with his future plans for the Detroit Red Wings
The newly elected coach, Todd McLellan, has kept the team in a playoff hunt, aligning perfectly with the Yzerman's vision.
The two navigate Detroit's challenges integrally, ensuring they can rebuild their roster without long-term overpays and securing cap-friendly deals (such as
Dylan Larkin,
Lucas Raymond, and Seider).
Why the 'Yzerplan' is beneficial for Detroit
Yzerman's ability to dissect with passion and patience will undoubtedly work for the organization in the long run.
His patience for his prospects such as
Sebastian Cossa,
Simon Edvinsson, and
Jonatan Berggren reflects his methodical approach, and with many more prospects working in the shadows to provide the organization the support they need, the 'Yzerplan' promises a strong future for the Detroit Red Wings.
