The Detroit Red Wings have begun the process of changing up the status quo, as GM Steve Yzerman and Todd McLellan have fired two coaches today.
The
Detroit Red Wings are moving in a different direction. Today, they have said goodbye to goalie coach Alex Westlund and video coach LJ Scarpace.
While a major hollowing out of the remnants of Derek Lalonde's tenure may not happen, this is the first step in McLellan making the Red Wing staff his own. An adjustment to his liking is better wording.
With the firing of LJ Scarpace and Alex Westlund, what is to make of the other assistants who were around with Lalonde?
According to NHL Insider Max Bultman of The Athletic, Alex Tanguay and Jay Varady will stick around and help McLellan out in the future.
The
Red Wings could use a major change and not just in the lineup, as the results haven't been great. They were unable to win a wild card spot in the East and finished 6th in the Atlantic Division.
Not ideal for a team that advertises itself as competitive, despite the lack of meaningful pieces.
With a 39-35-8 record, you'd expect a major change in the front office and coaching staff. With the departure of Scarpace and Westlund, the moves remain meager, but it shows that McLellan isn't happy with the status quo when Lalonde was around.
McLellan had a 15-4-1 record with the
Red Wings in February and will look to replicate that kind of play at the beginning of next season.
He, like the Red Wings lineup, needs the right people for the right job.
McLellan has a record of 48-28-16-4, .583 with the Red Wings in 2024-2025. Can he improve upon it next year?
