Simon Edvinsson is one of a handful of Red Wings players heading overseas for the IIHF World Championships, and Sweden's head coach reveals his thoughts.
While the season is over for the Detroit Red Wings without a playoff spot, that doesn't mean that all of their players are ready to stop playing for the summer.
Both Lucas Raymond and Simon Edvinsson will be representing their native Sweden in the upcoming IIHF World Championships; the games, being hosted by both Sweden and Denmark, begin on Friday.
Edvinsson, who is coming off his 1st full year in the NHL (though he was technically not considered a rookie), drew the praise of Swedish head coach Sam Hallam for how his development has progressed:
Him and Detroit have done an incredible job with his development. His play this year has earned the trust to play a lot, and play in key situations.
Red Wings coach Todd McLellan, who took over from the terminated Derek Lalonde on December 26, took notice of Edvinsson and had nothing but good things to say about his play.
He's a harder player now. e's more aggressive now. He is more responsible for the good and the bad things that happen during a game. Like he has really grown up and maybe gone from a boy to a man.
McLellan also said that there is still room for improvement in Edvinsson's game, which can only bode well for Detroit.
I don't know if that's fair to say. But you know, there's still more runway there for him to keep going. So you see all the hockey stuff, we see all the other evolution, the commitment to strength and both mentally and physically exist with him. So that's been impressive.
