The buyout window for the Detroit Red Wings will be a short one, so Steve Yzerman will have to move with speed to address the Justin Holl issue.

The Detroit Red Wings could use the postseason to reset the roster and clean up some mistakes. One of those is Yzerman's own, a signing of veteran defenseman Justin Holl, who has been a placeholder in the lineup while the rebuild marches on.
Holl, who's never been known for his great defensive or offensive skills, has been a fixture in the Red Wings lineup. While he's made some trips up and down between the Griffins and the Wings, he's been a regular on the bottom pair with Erik Gustafsson.
Holl's been a disappointment during his stint in Detroit, playing a total of 111 games for the Wings and scoring 13 points (2-11), 117 blocked shots, and 94 hits. While his play is certainly not worth $3.4 million AAV, Yzerman seemed to think so after he spent the majority of his career with the underachieving Toronto Maple Leafs.
Now, he could use the next 48 hours to get out of this $10.2 million deal, and open up a spot for a younger player, or a better blueliner.
Buying out Holl would save $1.13 million on the cap this year, and $2.22 million on the cap in 2026-27.
Not only would a clean break allow him to explore other opportunities, but it would give the Red Wings extra cap space to work with.
This season in Detroit, he skated for 67 games and posted 5 points (1-4).
