A goaltender has just revealed he will not be signing with the Detroit Red Wings
In a new development, a false alert regarding a signing by the Detroit Red Wings has emerged.
Back in early April, rumors about the Swedish goaltender Arvid Holm being on his way to Detroit started to flow.
Given the Red Wings' needs, the speculation made some sense. With general manager Steve Yzerman acknowledging the shallow pool of NHL-caliber UFA goalies available this offseason, Detroit was clearly in the market.
Yzerman needed a capable veteran to support top prospect
Sebastian Cossa with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins and provide NHL backup potential behind Cam Talbot and
Petr Mrazek, if both of them end up remaining in Detroit.
Arvid Holm appeared to be an ideal candidate. The 26-year-old goalie brings size (6-foot-5, 205 pounds), North American experience from three AHL seasons with the Manitoba Moose, and elite-level performance in Sweden's elite league.
In fact, Holm was coming off a breakout campaign with Rögle, where he ended the campaing with a .925 save percentage and a 1.90 GAA, earning the prestigious Honken Trophy, awarded to the SHL's best goaltender.
According to a new report, Holm confirmed that Detroit was among the NHL teams actively pursuing him:
"It has been a long journey. We went out early and contact was made early. There have been many interviews with clubs that wanted to hear from us."
But when the NHL's June 15 deadline to sign European-based players arrived, Holm remained under contract with Rögle through 2027.
The goaltender admits confusion over the situation:
"It has continued. That's part of it. A lot of questions from people who want to know. I myself have felt that I didn't know and then people may have a hard time accepting that it is actually so."
It seems NHL fans ill have to wait two more seasons before seeing him in North America, if he ever decides to come over.
