Red Wings coach Todd McLellan spoke after his team lost for the 11th time in their last 14 games, a 4-3 loss on home ice to the Ottawa Senators.
The Detroit Red Wings fell into a familiar trap of trailing and then finding it was too late in the bitter end.
The divisional foe Ottawa Senators bested them 4-3 at Litle Caesars Arena on Thursday night, meaning that the Red Wings have now lost 11 of 14 games in the month of March.
It's going to be a considerable challenge for the Red Wings to make the playoffs for the 1st time since 2016. But McLellan indicated that his team has not pre-occupied themselves with schedule and standings watching.
We've been trying to do that, almost from Day 1 here, where we want to focus on what's in front of us and deal with that. Put a good effort in, adjust, fix things and then move on. I don't think that changes at all down the stretch here. We start looking at schedule, games, point differential that stuff, it's not going to do us any good.
McLellan continued while talking about Ottawa:
They've played with some confidence since (March 10), or prior to (that game). Their goaltending has been really elite in the last few weeks. (Goaltender Linus) Ullmark has given them a chance to play through some patches in games where they haven't played real well or it got a little ugly for a few shifts. He's been able to bail them out.
The Red Wings next face the struggling divisional foe Boston Bruins at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday night.
