Trade call completed between the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins
The Detroit Red Wings are one of multiple NHL teams that have completed a call to the Pittsburgh Penguins about defenseman Erik Karlsson.
With a cap hit of $11.5 million, Dubas will have to find a way to retain a portion of the veteran defenseman's salary in order to make the move more palatable. In addition to retainage, the defenseman will once again have to waive his no-movement clause to accept a trade.
Karlsson scored 53 points (11-42) in 82 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins this season, playing on the 2nd-pairing with
Ryan Graves.
Karlsson could be an impact player on a Red Wings team with shallow defensive core depth. The team acquired a gritty defenseman,
Jacob Bernard-Docker, during the postseason, but that won't solve all of the team's woes.
If anything, he's more of an insurance policy for the future.
According to Lyle Richardson of The Hockey News, Karlsson would prefer a move to a team that has a shot at winning the Stanley Cup. Sounds typical, right?
It gets a little more hairy with the Red Wings, considering they almost earned a wildcard spot in the playoffs last year.
With the addition of
John Gibson, the Red Wings could sell him on the possibility of the playoffs, with his help, of course.
No word on what will happen next.
