Detroit Red Wings acquire Erik Karlsson from the Pittsburgh Penguins: The cost has been revealed

The Detroit Red Wings are missing key pieces in the lineup, which could propel the team into playoff contention.

While they could look at free agents elsewhere, other opportunities could arise as the Pittsburgh Penguins continue their rebuild. A rebuild that GM Steve Yzerman could benefit from, as they would be willing sellers of veteran talent.

Talent, like Erik Karlsson, and a top-six winger, Bryan Rust. The duo would provide stability in the lineup on the offense and defense, not to mention Rust's experience in the playoffs.

Kyle Dubas could receive a nice haul of futures in return for Bryan Rust and Erik Karlsson if he retains 35% of Karlsson's contract, along with sending Rust.

What would the Red Wings have to offer in return for the duo? Center Nate Danielson, winger Jonatan Berggren, who needs a fresh start elsewhere, and a 2026 2nd-round pick.

While you may say: No. The Red Wings' blueline isn't built to last in the playoffs, and Karlsson's experience could lend well to the Red Wings' future hopes.

Despite being "past his prime," Karlsson put up 53 points (11-42) in 82 games and is only two seasons removed from his 101-point year in San Jose. He's got plenty of hockey left in him to play.

While Bryan Rust could slot up and down the lineup for the Red Wings, providing much-needed secondary scoring, as he produced 65 points (31-34) in Pittsburgh last year.

The Red Wings' prospect pool is deep enough that Yzerman could sacrifice some futures to gain more win-now pieces in the lineup.
