The Detroit Red Wings could bolster their depth on the blue line if they were to claim two San Jose Sharks players who were placed on waivers today.

Two NHL defensemen were placed on waivers Sunday by the San Jose Sharks.
According to a report from NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, the Sharks have cut Jack Thompson and Lucas Carlsson from the roster today.
If they pass through waivers, they'll have to report to the AHL's San Jose Barracuda.
However, this presents a unique opportunity for the Red Wings, who could also use more prospects to bolster the blue line depth.

The Detroit Red Wings Could Add Defensemen Jack Thompson and Lucas Carlsson

The Detroit Red Wings are a team that needs help in multiple spots in the lineup. The blue line isn't exactly their strong point, and finding bargain bin prospects on waivers wouldn't be a terrible idea.
If they were to claim either player, the team could add to the Grand Rapids Griffins and give them a fresh start in the NHL.
Jack Thompson was originally a 3rd-round pick (93rd overall) of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020.
Thompson has seen a limited number of NHL games, playing 34, where he'd score 10 points (4-6). The majority of his NHL experience has come from playing for the San Jose Sharks last season.
Lucas Carlsson is another defenseman who has struggled to find a home in the NHL and last played for the San Jose Sharks in 2024-25.
The defenseman was selected (110th overall) in 2016 by the Chicago Blackhawks.
During his career, split between the Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers, and San Jose Sharks, he's only scored a total of 15 points (4-11).
Both defensemen have the same kind of experience in the NHL, where they have failed to crack the lineup and would be considered reclamation projects.
They both have a cap hit of $800K AAV and could be a considerable depth addition for injuries or just to keep the AHL roster stocked in Grand Rapids.
Considering the ascension of Axel Sandin-Pellika, it wouldn't be bad to consider it.
