GM Ken Holland delivered four Stanley Cups to the Red Wings organization, but the latter part of his tenure saw him select some busts in the NHL Draft, including Riley Sheahan, now an ex-Seattle Kraken.

Despite the fact that the new crop of Detroit Red Wingsremains promising, you can't gloss over the failures of the past.
If you intend to learn from them, that is. GM Ken Holland had a long reign in Detroit and held the job from 1997 to 2019. While he did build solid rosters in the late 90s to the early 00s-10s there were players who were thought to be solid enough to become regular NHL stars, but didn't work out.
We'll go over two of those who were busts and first-round picks by the aforementioned GM, who has since stepped aside in Edmonton for Stan Bowman.

Riley Sheahan

Sheahan was drafted 21st overall in the 1st-round of the 2010 NHL Draft. He was a responsible two-way center out of Notre Dame, he wasn't an offensive wunderkind. The Washington Capitals would select Evgeny Kuznetsov five picks later. Needless to say, we all saw the Capitals win a cup, while Sheahan would bounce around the league during his NHL career.
While Sheahan would provide some meaningful two-way play that saw him score 36 points in 72 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins and earn a regular spot in Detroit in 2013-2014, he'd never reach the heights of Kuznetsov.
He'd finish his NHL career with a total of 634 games played and 194 points (74 goals, 120 assists).
Not the production you'd expect of someone who was selected 21st overall.

Filip Zadina

Filip Zadina recently signed a two-year deal with HC Davos in Switzerland. Originally selected sixth overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, expectations were high for the forward, and he never met them, once.
He last played an NHL game for the San Jose Sharks and couldn't find a spot on a rebuilding roster, on a bottom-dwelling team in the league.
In 262 career NHL games, he'd only scored a total of 91 points (41 goals, 50 assists) and now played in Swiss-A for HC Davos.
They passed on Evan Bouchard for him?!
