Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jake Walman center of playoff controversy in Game 1
During the third period of Game 1, the former Red Wing,
Jake Walman, was called for a delay of game penalty following the 29-year old flipping the puck over the glass, which unfortunately concluded in him earning his second penalty of the period.
However, Walman and the Oilers were confident as well as convinced that the puck initially hit the glass prior to going out of play, which they would later challenge the call on the ice.
This would result in a lengthy video review from the NHL's situation room in Toronto.
Despite the puck appearing as though it had bounced off the glass prior to it heading out of play, the NHL officials weren't convinced, as they handed Edmonton a penalty for a failed coaches challenge as well as the delay of game call.
According to the National Hockey League's rulebook, there must be 'conclusive' evidence in order to overturn a call, and unfortunately for the Oilers, the challenged call was no where near beneficial.
Although the puck did appear to change direction and was reportedly heard hitting the glass in full speed, the game-altering call made by officials was nothing less than detrimental to Edmonton, and let's just say, fans were no where near pleased.
Comments continued to pour into social media by Oilers fans who were over the moon frustrated by the suggested miscall by the referees, and unfortunately for hockey fans, this scenario is just the tip of the iceberg in questionable calls made within the NHL.
Do you think the NHL should be harder on referee's and their questionable calls?
