After lower body injuries sidelined Ville Husso last season, he's entering this year eager to secure a key position in the Detroit Red Wings' goalie lineup.
For the first time in a long while, Ville Husso is healthy and eager to prove himself as a starting goaltender for the Detroit Red Wings. After struggling with two lower body injuries that limited him to just one appearance after Christmas last season, Ville Husso is ready to reclaim his spot.
"I feel really good. It's been a great start to camp, with good speed on the ice," he said, expressing confidence at "110%."
However, Ville Husso faces stiff competition. The Detroit Red Wings also have Alex Lyon, last season's eventual starter, and free agent addition Cam Talbot, an All-Star who helped the L.A. Kings reach the playoffs. With only one starting role available and just two nets in practice, Ville Husso knows he needs to shine in every opportunity.
"The key is to stay healthy and battle," he explained. "We have a good competition, pushing each other to improve daily."
Coach Derek Lalonde emphasized the need for Ville Husso to gain live reps, highlighting the difference between being healthy and ready for NHL competition. Given the challenge of rotating three goaltenders, securing quality practice time will be crucial.
Ville Husso spent the offseason training in Finland and skated with NHL stars in Detroit, where he impressed teammates like Alex DeBrincat.
"He's back to being hard to score on in practice," DeBrincat noted.
As Ville Husso fights for his starting position, he's employing new techniques, including breathing methods to stay grounded. With heightened expectations for the season, the pressure is on to deliver strong performances and secure a playoff spot.
