We now know who the Red Wings are trading to acquire Erik Karlsson from the Penguins: Per NHL insider
According to NHL Insider Roger Hicks on "X" the Detroit Red Wings are in on veteran defenseman Erik Karlsson, as Steve Yzerman could give up a prospect in return for the Swedish defenseman, would you sacrifice Jonatan Berggren for him?
The Detroit Red Wings aren't done yet. Free agency began on July 1st to much fanfare, and to much dismay if you're a Red Wings fan.
People believed that Yzerman should've been bolder in his moves this season. Of course,
John Gibson was a nice acquisition, but his next target could be controversial.
According to Roger Hicks, NHL Insider the Red Wings are interested in helping the Penguins rebuild by swapping forward Jonatan Berggren for the former 100+ point defenseman.
Karlsson is way past his prime and was unable to secure a cup in San Jose, and failed to do so in Pittsburgh. If what Roger says is true, the Red Wings would have to prioritize a significant amount of cap space to acquire him.
He currently makes $11.5 million and will be a pending UFA at the end of the 2025-26 season.
So, Yzerman would be pushing the Wings against the available cap to make a deal for him.
We're not seeing the long-term thinking in this move, if it goes through as it seems more of a "win-now" kind of option.
In 82 games with the Penguins, Karlsson scored 53 points (11-42), so while he's past his prime, he's still a capable contributor.
Which the Red Wings aren't ready for, in our opinion.
Regardless, more on this story as it develops.
