Hockey insider Frank Seravalli suggests that the Red Wings are really close to becoming contenders, but general manager Steve Yzerman must add some missing key pieces to the mix in order to bolster the team, specifically on defence. The Red Wings have two all star defenders in the making with Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson, but they are missing that third big defenceman in order to truly be a threat.

Simon Edvinsson is coming, all the scouting reports I've received have said they've been impressed with what they've seen. But to me, they need more depth. They have Seider, they have Edvinsson, but they need at least three really good defensemen to get you into the playoffs. They got a lot of work to do"
