Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins Swap Goalies On This Day In NHL History
On September 7, 1967, a goalie swap between the Pens and the Wings went down.
Detroit sent
Hank Bassen to Pittsburgh in return for Roy Edwards.
Bassen played 155 NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks, Red Wings, and Penguins, averaging a .902 SV% and a 2.95 GAA over his career.
He notably won a WHL championship with the Vancouver Canucks in 1960 and a Calder Cup with the Pittsburgh Hornets in the AHL during the 1966-67 season.
He retired from the NHL one season after the trade that sent him to Pittsburgh.
As for Edwards, he took part in 236 NHL games with the Wings and the Pens. He retired in 1974, with a 96-90-35 NHL record, a 2.92 GAA, and a .902 SV%.
The Wings would like to add a top-six forward, and the Penguins reportedly have a few candidates available, such as
Bryan Rust or
Rickard Rakell.
