Ex-Detroit Red Wings forward Joe Veleno, who was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for Petr Mrazek, could be a candidate to have his contract bought out.

The Red Wings decided that former 1st round draft pick Joe Veleno no longer fit into their long term plans, and traded him to the Chicago Blackhawks in March for goaltender Petr Mrazek.
But it doesn't look as though Veleno is going to be fitting into the long-term plans of the Blackhawks either. He's been listed as a potential buyout candidate by Frank Seravalli of The Daily Faceoff in his recent list.
Veleno is the only player on the board this year under age 26, which would allow for a one-third buyout as opposed to two-thirds, providing significant cost savings. It also isn't a guarantee that he is bought out, as he filled out the lineup last season after a deadline trade from Detroit in exchange for a more expensive Petr Mrazek. But Veleno is still a candidate as Chicago sorts out what their forward group looks like next season and beyond. There are cost savings to be realized to the tune of $1.2 million in real cash.

Veleno has 1 year left on his current deal with an AAV (average annual value) of $2.275 million. If Chicago were to buy out the last year of his deal, it would cost them $796K this year and $296K next year.
He finished with 17 points (8G, 9A) in 74 games split between Detroit and Chicago.
The Red Wings took him with the 30th pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, using the pick that they received from the Vegas Golden Knights in return for Tomas Tatar.
