Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman made a surprising announcement today, after one season playing with the Montreal Canadiens AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket, Gustav Lindstrom has retired.
Gustav Lindstrom is relatively young, at least to retire from professional hockey. The former
Red Wings defenseman was drafted 38th overall in the 2nd round of the 2017 NHL Draft.
Now, he's giving up on his NHL Dreams. Lindstrom would never make it as a full-time NHLer as he'd jump between the AHL and NHL multiple times during his career.
His latest stint with the Laval Rocket saw him play a total of 42 AHL games, and he'd tally 11 points (4 goals, 7 assists) with 28 PIMs.
In fact, he started his career with the
Red Wings, honing his skills with the Grand Rapids Griffins during the 2019-2020 season, playing 45 games and scoring only 5 points (5 assists).
Instead of attempting to pursue his NHL dreams further, and remain disappointed as he'd likely be simmering in the minor leagues, he's hanging up his skates and heading back home to Europe.
He recently announced before his retirement from the NHL that he'd be signing in Sweden with the SHL's Djurgarden IF.
Lindstrom's career in the NHL was, unfortunately, short, and punctuated with only 174 games, with 35 points scored (5-30) and 80 PIMs.
For Lindstrom, he'll be able to once again play and live in his home country, which will be a major convenience for him.
But, as for his dreams of being an NHL player? Gone.
Best of luck in your future endeavors, Gustav Lindstrom.
