Ex-Red Wings Defenseman Heads To Europe After NHL Dreams Die
Former Red Wings defenseman Robert Hagg is headed to Sweden after signing a deal with Brynas, he last suited up in the NHL for the Vegas Golden Knights.
Robert Hagg's career in the NHL is over. After playing 12 seasons in the league, he is relocating to his home country of Sweden.
The 30-year-old will be joining Brynas of the SHL on a one-year deal.
Hagg's hockey career in the NHL began during the 2016-2017 season in the NHL, joining the Philadelphia Flyers. They originally drafted him 41st overall in the 2nd round of the NHL draft in 2013.
He wouldn't be known as a star defenseman, but would become a journeyman, as he played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings ( in 2022-2023), Florida Panthers, Anaheim Ducks, and Vegas Golden Knights.
He'd only suit up for 2 games with the Golden Knights in 2024-2025, before being sent down to the AHL to play for Henderson.
Hagg would find work, purely as a defensive defenseman, but wouldn't turn heads with his play.
Instead of attempting to make the cut once again, it seems he opted to return home to Sweden and gain more playing time on the ice as his star waned in the last few seasons in the NHL.
His career totals are as follows: 345 GP-63P (16 goals, 47 assists).
He last played in the AHL with the Henderson Silver Knights for the majority of the AHL season, scoring 29 points (7 goals, 22 assists) in 57 games.
With a team as deep as the Vegas Golden Knights, it's pretty obvious why he never made it up the depth charts.
