A Detroit Red Wings forward is refusing to report to his organization and a dispute is caused with the team
The Detroit Red Wings and prospect Michael Svrcek are currently in dispute, as the forward has chosen to remain with his SHL team, the Brynas IF, in 2025-26.
Detroit Red Wings prospect
Michal Svrcek was selected in the 5th round of the 2025 NHL Draft (119th overall).
The Red Wings prospect has spent the last few seasons in the SHL playing with the Brynas IF.
The Red Wings prospect played 17 games with the Brynas IF, scoring only 3 points (1-2) as a left-winger. He'd play 30 games in the SHL Jr. League, scoring 30 points (14-16) in 30 games.
Svrcek has also been drafted in the OHL by the Windsor Spitfires, another option to help him grow into a better hockey player all around.
Instead, he remains steadfast in his goal to play in the SHL with Brynas IF, refusing to report to the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL.
A move that could be seen as insubordinate, crude, and ungrateful, depending on who you ask.
"The Spitfires recently told the Windsor Star's Jim Parker that they haven't given up on bringing Svrcek over to North America."
Ironically, it wasn't Svrcek alone who made the decision to stay in Sweden and play for Brynas IF:
This week I agreed with my agent and Detroit's management that I will stay in Brynas for another season, where I will try to start the season in the A-team."
Friction Between Steve Yzerman and the Spitfires?
With news of Svrcek returning to the SHL in order to re-join the Bryunas IF squad, it seems he's been put at odds with the OHL team that drafted him, the Windsor Spitfires.
It's not often that you hear of OHL and NHL teams clashing, but with Steve Yzerman's advice to develop in Europe for another year, it's an obvious upset.
The irony is rich, to say the least.
Given how good of a relationship NHL teams typically have with the junior leagues, this is a departure from the usual status quo, as they typically report to their CHL team.
For now, it seems that Svrcek will get to hone his game for one more year in the SHL before heading to junior leagues in Canada.
