A major announcement confirms Detroit's receiving another professional sports team
A major announcement confirmed that sports fans in Detroit will have a new professional team to cheer for.
While all eyes have been on Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings in the past days, with the
NHL Draft and free agency, another massive announcement was made today regarding Women's Basketball in Detroit that will interest sports fans in Michigan: the WNBA is officially expanding to Detroit.
Tom Gores, who led the expansion bid and will be the controlling owner of the new team, released an official statement about what WNBA's return means to the city:
"This is a huge win for Detroit and the WNBA. Today marks the long-hoped-for return of the WNBA to a city with deep basketball roots and a championship tradition. Detroit played a key role in the league's early growth, and we're proud to reignite that legacy as the WNBA ascends to new heights. Our plans will bring new energy, investment and infrastructure to our city and the WNBA, and additional resources to our community.
We have brought together an impressive array of investors who reflect the strength and diversity of Detroit. I'm excited about what we can accomplish together to advance women's professional sports and inspire a new generation of fans. I'm grateful to our exceptional investor group, Commissioner Engelbert, and the WNBA for their trust in our vision and commitment to the people of Detroit."
The first game will be held in 2029, but fans can already sign up for the latest updates about the team:
The Detroit Red Wings showed their support for the new team with a post on X:
With Detroit, two more expansion teams were announced in Cleveland and Philadelphia.
Women's Basketball has been on the rise over the past years, with young stars such as Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese helping the league grow.
