Two 1st-overall picks, Patrick Kane and John Tavares, might've been selected two years apart, but the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs forwards are poised to make history this year.

Patrick Kane was a former 1st-overall pick in the NHL Draft in 2007 by the Chicago Blackhawks. Since then, he's played 1,302 games in the league and has been one of the best American-born forwards to lace up his skates.
Not too far behind is the Toronto Maple Leafs' own John Tavares, an original-six rival, and a fellow competitor who was also a 1st-round pick in 2009 by the New York Islanders. He's played 1,184 games in the NHL.

Patrick Kane & John Tavares Set To Break Personal Records in 2025-26

Despite between two years apart, both players are set to make history in the NHL this season.
Both forwards are set to join the 500-goal club this season.
With the surrounding cast in both Toronto and Detroit, it's not difficult to see Patrick Kane pulling it off. As Kane has 492 career goals in the league, with a total of 1,343 points scored
While Tavares has had a superstar cast surrounding him in Toronto, playing with Mitch Marner, William Nylander, and Auston Matthews for a significant chunk of his career, leaving him with only 6 goals to hit 500 scored in the NHL.
Tavares has scored 1,114 points during his NHL career and has yet to win a Stanley Cup. Unlike Kane.
Kane will once again slot in on the second line this season, flanking Marco Kasper should he make the team out of training camp. The chemistry is there, and we can see it happening once again, considering Kane did score 20+ goals in 2024-25.
It's only a matter of time!
