A signing is announced and a goaltender is leaving for good: A better opportunity
Rudy Guimond (6th-round draft pick in 2023 by Steve Yzerman) has unintentionally ignited controversy as the Detroit Red Wings draft pick has de-committed from Yale, and will instead be wearing Harvard's crimson red in 2025-26.
Rudy Guimond has shown a lot of promise as a future Red Wings goalie in the past season.
In 16 games with the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL, he played 16 games and ended the stint with a .940 save percentage.
He'd help the Wildcats win the Gilles-Courteau Trophy in 2024-25, and has chosen to take his talents to the Ivy League.
However, he hasn't been fully honest with himself or his former school of choice. He originally decided to commit to Yale and would be attending the school in 2026-27. But now, it seems the schools are in a tug-of-war, as he's second-guessed himself.
Instead, he'll be wearing Yale's rivals' colors next season: crimson red. He has instead pledged himself to play for the Harvard Crimson in 2025-26.
«I am honored to announce my commitment to pursue academics and play D1 hockey at Harvard University,» Guimond posted on his Instagram account. «I would like to thank my family, coaches, and everyone who has helped me along the way.»
The Bulldogs are an afterthought, as the Crimson must be selling something Guimond couldn't find with the Bulldogs.
Guimond's path as of late was positively affected by the latest rule change allowing players to jump from the CHL to the NCAA. He chose to play for the Moncton Wildcats after transferring from the USHL's Cedar Rapids.
A choice that not only paid off in spades for the Wildcats but also for his own personal growth.
Guimond would help lead the Wildcats to a Memorial Cup with a record of 8-1, 2.25 GAA, and a .916 save percentage.
